How to Chair a Meeting

The chairperson of any meeting has a number of important functions and is ultimately responsible for the success of that meeting. Many of these functions have their own special vocabulary of words and phrases.

Listen to the eight extracts of people chairing meetings and choose the correct word or phrase to complete the sentences according to what you hear.

1. The chairperson takes the organizational lead, such as by ensuring there is a written record of what was said during the meeting:

Could someone take the ­­­_________ of what we discuss so I can send these out later?

 
 
 

2. The chairperson ensures that the discussion remains focused on the items on the agenda:

4. The chairperson is responsible for making sure that everyone present participates fully in the meeting:
