Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<p>Chris: That brings us back to the question: do we want to host the event in Denmark or Croatia?<\/p>\n<p>Dana: It\u2019s too cold in Denmark. Let\u2019s go to Croatia.<\/p>\n<p>Richard: I still don\u2019t understand why we can\u2019t just do it in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Mark: Russia! Russia! Russia!<\/p>\n<p>Laura: We\u2019ve been talking about this for an hour. Can\u2019t we just choose one?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Strategies for dealing with deadlock<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>take a break and try again, but with a clear time limit to make a decision<\/li>\n<li>make a temporary decision that can be changed later<\/li>\n<li>use a problem-solving tool like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/focus-model.htm\">the FOCUS model<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Problem 2: Unimportant points<\/h2>\n<p>Situation: The group discusses trivial points and wastes time. For example:<\/p>\n<p>Mike: So should the picture be on page 343 or page 344 of the report?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Strategies for dealing with unimportant points<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>as facilitator, give one person the power to make a final decision<\/li>\n<li>scan the agenda and delete unimportant items before the meeting, then discuss those points with the relevant colleague privately<\/li>\n<li>if there\u2019s one idea that everyone seems to be happy with, name it as the choice and quickly move to the next point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Problem 3: stubbornness<\/h2>\n<p>Situation: One person sticks to their opinion no matter what anyone else says, and refuses to change their opinion. For example:<\/p>\n<p>Tina: I don\u2019t care what you say, I insist that we use Acme as our telephone company.<\/p>\n<p>John: But Acme is the most expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Tina: That\u2019s true. But our telephone company must be Acme.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Strategies for dealing with stubbornness<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>ask questions to find out why your colleague insists on this one option. Maybe there is information the group doesn\u2019t know that can help the discussion move forward. Insist on full answers to your questions.<\/li>\n<li>rather than attacking what you see as a stubborn approach, try to put yourself in your colleague\u2019s shoes.
