It\u2019s not always easy admitting that we are wrong. If we are not careful, apologies can quickly turn into excuses, and eventually switch from \u201cI\u2019m sorry for what I did\u201d to \u201cI\u2019m sorry you feel that way!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Reasons to apologise correctly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Not apologising correctly can lead to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Damaged professional relationships<\/li>\n<li>Delays in information exchange<\/li>\n<li>Time wasted handling unnecessary issues<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So what can you say to avoid these issues and make sure your apology is appropriate?<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m so sorry\u201d is always a good way to start!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Phrases to use to ensure an appropriate apology<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Informal<\/span><br \/>\n<em>I was wrong.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I shouldn\u2019t have said\/done that.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I made a stupid mistake.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m genuinely really sorry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Formal<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Please accept my sincere apology.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>My comments to you were ill-advised.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There is no excuse for my behaviour.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It was not my intention to&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m terribly sorry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The key to a successful apology is sincerity. If it doesn&#8217;t sound like we mean it then the apology has failed. Clustering a few sentences together often sounds more sincere, for example,<em> \u201cPlease accept my sincere apology. My comments to you were inappropriate and there was no excuse for my behaviour.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Outcomes of a sincere, appropriate apology<\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Respect from colleagues that strengthens your business relationships<\/li>\n<li>Faster and smoother cooperation with colleagues<\/li>\n<li>Opening up time not spent dealing with the \u201cclean up\u201d of a bad apology<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Have you had experience in apologising to someone in English?
