Sven was clearly able and bright \u2013 but he was a classic \u201cintrovert\u201d. The idea <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extraversion_and_introversion\">of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extraversion_and_introversion\">extraversion\u2013introversion<\/a><strong> is a core dimension in most personality trait models, including the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.targettraining.eu\/item\/mbti\/\">Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator<\/a><strong>. Sven is reflective rather than outgoing, and prefers working alone to working in groups.\u00a0 Sven wanted to think before he talked, as opposed to talking to think. If the organizer hasn\u2019t prepared an agenda then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.targettraining.eu\/de\/meeting-begins-4-added-value-ideas-great-chair-persons-facilitators-weve-worked\/\">ask them what they want to get from the meeting and which questions do they want to discuss<\/a> Who is going to be there? Why have they been invited? Who will assume which roles? Get your thoughts together ahead of time. Write down questions, concerns and points you want to share. Turn up with a couple of clear points you want to contribute. This preparation means that you can \u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Speak up early on<\/h2>\n<p>If you know what the meeting is about you can and should get actively involved as quickly as possible. Get your thoughts on the table as quickly as you can. This means that you will feel part of the meeting from the start, others will see you as involved and you\u2019ll notice people connecting, challenging, or building on your contributions. And if your meeting quickly goes into an unexpected direction \u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Take control if you aren\u2019t ready to speak<\/h2>\n<p>When somebody wants to pull you in to the meeting and you feel you aren\u2019t ready then actively control this. You have the right to take a little more time. Try expressions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cI\u2019d like to think this through fully first before I answer\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cI\u2019m thinking this through and would like a little more time\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cI\u2019d like to let this settle and think it over. Can I get back to you this afternoon?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be aware that there is a danger of over-thinking too, and you may find the meeting has moved on too fast. With this in mind \u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Accept that sometimes you need to just speak<\/h2>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t fully ready to speak but feel you can\u2019t ask for time try expressions like \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cI\u2019m just thinking out loud now \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cMy first thought is \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a fully-formed suggestion but how about \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cIdeally I\u2019d like to think this over some more , but my initial impression is ..\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And you don\u2019t always need to have original ideas. If you\u2019re not at your best try to \u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Play to your strengths and leverage your listening skills<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/16-personality-types.com\/mbti-four-dichotomies\/extraversion-introversion\/\">Many introverts are considered good listeners.<\/a>\u00a0You haven\u2019t been talking that much and you\u2019ve probably heard things that others haven\u2019t (as they\u2019ve been busy talking). This means you can \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cIf I can just reflect back what I\u2019ve heard so far \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve heard is \u2026 \u201c<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cI heard Olaf mention XXX, but then everybody kept moving on. I\u2019d like to go back and ask \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cI think we\u2019ve missed something here ..\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cThere seems to be a lot of focus on XX, but nobody has thought about YYY\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cIf I can play devil\u2019s advocate for a moment ..\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Accept and embrace that you can\u2019t be perfect (all the time)<\/h2>\n<p>Nobody wants to come across as stupid or incompetent. But if you aren\u2019t visible be aware that people may quickly see you as \u201cthe assistant\u201d, or \u201cthe doer but not the thinker\u201d.\u00a0 Everybody has said things that have been wrong, incomplete, or poorly thought through. And vulnerability is\u00a0 important for building trust. We trust people who are human and fallible. Be open to risking sharing ideas and thoughts and try expressions like \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cThis idea isn\u2019t fully formed but maybe you can help me \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cI\u2019m concerned I\u2019ve got the wrong end of the stick here so let me just check ..\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cI know I\u2019m missing something but here\u2019s where I am so far ..\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>And finally&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>If the English is an issue then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.targettraining.eu\/item\/facilitating-meetings-english\/\">consider getting some targeted training.<\/a> By doing the above you\u2019ll quickly begin to be seen as playing an active role, and be viewed as a contributor.
