But it\u2019s arguably wrong to see listening as one of many \u201ccommunication skills\u201d \u2013 listening is so much more fundamental than that. Listening builds trust, strengthens relationships, and resolves conflicts. It\u2019s fundamental in everything we do. In a HBR article <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/06\/the-discipline-of-listening\">&#8222;the discipline of listening&#8220;<\/a><strong>, Ram Charan shared what many of us already know: Not every manager is a great listener. Charan\u2019s own \u201cknowledge of corporate leaders\u2019 360-degree feedback indicates that <em>one out of four <\/em>leaders has a listening deficit, \u201cthe effects of which can paralyze cross-unit collaboration, sink careers, and if it\u2019s the CEO with the deficit, derail the company.\u201d Good managers need to know how to listen \u2013 and great managers know how to listen well. By practicing deliberate listening and putting aside our own judgements we can discover things we don\u2019t know that we don\u2019t know.\u00a0 She moves beyond the obvious \u201ctechniques\u201d (e.g. look them in the eye, nod your head and repeat back what you\u2019ve heard) and challenges us to think about letting go of positions (e.g. \u201cI want to be right\u201d) and embracing learning &#8211; letting go of our need to judge.
