Evidence like this shows why Germans are rightfully proud of their English skills &#8211; and the vast majority of Germans we work with want to be even better. If your first language is German, and you want to <\/strong><a href=\"\/?page_id=3385\">improve your English at work<\/a>,<strong> you might find it frustrating that your English-speaking colleagues don\u2019t correct you. After all, you can\u2019t get better if you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing wrong! In this post, we\u2019re going to take a look at a handful of German speaker errors that are really common in Business English. The good news? To fix it, leave out the <strong>about<\/strong> after the verb <em>discuss<\/em>. So the correct English sentence is <em>\u201cWe discussed last month\u2019s figures at the meeting.\u201d <\/em>Keep in mind that you can use <strong>about <\/strong><em>after<\/em> the noun \u201cdiscussions\u201d as in \u201c<em>There were <strong>discussions about last month\u2019s figures<\/strong> at the meeting\u201d. <\/em><\/p>\n<h2>2. &#8222;Good morning together.&#8220;<\/h2>\n<p>This is a direct translation of a lovely (and efficient) German way of greeting everyone at the same time. Logically, <strong>together<\/strong>, makes 100% sense but it doesn\u2019t work in English. How can you fix it? As with about in the last example, cut it out completely. The correct English phrase is simply <em>\u201cGood morning\u201d.\u00a0 <\/em>You can also use alternatives like \u201c<em>Good morning everyone<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>Morning all<\/em>\u201d (informal)<\/p>\n<h2>3. &#8222;We see us tomorrow.&#8220;<\/h2>\n<p>This is also a direct translation from German. We don\u2019t have an identical phrase in English, so it sounds understandable, but strange in English. In this case, you need to use another expression. So the correct English sentence is \u201c<em>We\u2019ll see each other tomorrow\u201d.\u00a0 <\/em>You can also use<em> \u201cSee you tomorrow.\u201d o<\/em>r<em> \u201cLook forward to seeing you tomorrow.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>4. &#8222;I visit normally on Thursdays my clients in Bamberg.&#8220;<\/h2>\n<p>The word order is German. The sentence is 100% understandable, but it simply sounds wrong in English (likewise when English speakers speak German it can be understandable but grammatically wrong). Adverbs of frequency (words like: normally, sometimes, always, never) <em>almost always<\/em> go between the person (I) and the verb (visit). So, the correct English sentence is <em>\u201c I normally visit my clients in Bamberg on Thursdays.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<h2>5. &#8222;I work since five years by my company.&#8220;<\/h2>\n<p>There are only 8 words here, but there are actually 4 mistakes in this sentence.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The tense (work) is wrong.<\/li>\n<li>We can\u2019t combine<strong> since<\/strong> and a period of time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>By <\/strong>is not the right preposition.<\/li>\n<li>The word order is German.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to fix it:<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If something started in the past, is happening now, and is likely to continue in the future, then we usually use present perfect simple or continuous e.g. <em>I have worked \/ I have been working\u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li>We can use <strong>since<\/strong> with a <strong>point in time<\/strong>, and <strong>for<\/strong> with a <strong>period of time. <\/strong>e<strong>.<\/strong>g. <em>since 2012\/ for 5 years.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>There are very few concrete rules for prepositions. You just need to develop a feel for them and learn them in a context. In English we say \u201c We work <strong>for<\/strong> a company\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Word order.
