Belbin Team Inventory
The Belbin Team Inventory is a personality test used by organizations since 1981 to boost team performance.By understanding your individual team roles, your team can assess how effectively you are likely to work together, and identify gaps and overlaps in the team role distribution which can have an impact on your success. Belbin team types will help you to reduce the need for external motivation by selecting people who will perform tasks naturally.
How does it work?
You start by completing the Belbin Self-Perception Inventory.
You have the option to ask other people who work with you to complete an Observer Assessment.
You learn which of the 9 Belbin team roles you have an affinity towards, and which ones you don’t.
If your team is completing the Belbin Self-Perception Inventory together, you can produce a team report.
You’ll work with an experienced trainer to reflect on your results, and consider the next steps.

“Belbin addresses the key problems teams face. Team types will help you to reduce the need for external motivation by selecting people who will perform tasks naturally. They will help you to have a common language to use to solve team problems without judgement or negativity. And lastly, Belbin team types will help you to find the right approach to complex tasks. Belbin’s 9 Team Roles
Dr. Meredith Belbin studied team-work for many years, and observed that the most successful teams are those with a mix of different people with a range of different behaviours. These different behaviours are known as “team roles”, and can be clustered into nine distinct tendencies.
Resource Investigator
Provides inside knowledge on the opposition and makes sure that the team’s idea will carry to the outside world.
Co-ordinator
Needed to focus on the team’s objectives, draw out team members and delegate work appropriately.
Monitor Evaluator
Provides a logical eye, making impartial judgements where required and weighs up the team’s options in a dispassionate way.
Teamworker
Helps the team to gel, using their versatility to identify the work required and complete it on behalf of the team.
Plant
Tends to be highly creative and good at solving problems in unconventional ways.
Specialist
Brings in-depth knowledge of a key area to the team.
Shaper
Provides the necessary drive to ensure that the team keep moving and do not lose focus or momentum.
Implementer
Needed to plan a workable strategy and carry it out as efficiently as possible.
Completer Finisher
Most effectively used at the end of tasks to polish and scrutinise the work for errors, subjecting it to the highest standards of quality control.
